Abatis- n. A form of defensive obstacle made from the sharpened limbs of trees lying on the ground to
prevent the passage of troops.
Anachronism- n. Something out of place in the time period being represented. A historical oddity.
Authenticity- n. Fidelity to historical detail.
Battle Shirt- n. A flannel overshirt made early in the war as a substitute for a coat.
Bayonet- n. A blade that can be fixed on the muzzle end of a musket.
Bombproof- n. A structure built to withstand artillery fire.
Bumblebee- n. OK, this one is an inside joke with my unit. A bumblebee is a female reenactor who wears
unrealistically bright and flashy colors.
Campaign- n. A series of battles linked to a strategic offensive or defensive. Troops involved in a campaign
typically travel in light marching order.
Campaigner- n. An authentic reenactor who sleeps in a dog tent, shebang or under the stars as troops
during the war did when on campaign.
Canteen- n. A tin, wood, or stainless steel vessel with a strap used for carrying water.
Chasseur- n. Troops wearing French-inspired uniforms with medium-length jackets and kepis.
Chevaux de Frise- n. Defensive obstacles made of wooden stakes driven through a central log to create an
X pattern.
Dog Tent- n. A shelter half. Small tent made for two soldiers.
Enfield- n. Type of rifle-musket used by the Confederate army.
Enfilade- n. To fire at a body of troops from the side.
Farb- n. One who is not authentic. A rude, careless individual who does not correctly portray a person from
the period that they reenact.
Farbette- n. A female farb.
Food Prep Regiment- n. Term coined by Jonah Begone for a regiment that spends all of their time in camp
cooking and eating.
Frock Coat- n. A longer coat worn in both armies.
Hardcore- adj. A reenactor who strives for complete authenticity in every aspect of life at an event.
Hardtack- n. Hard crackers issued by the Union quartermaster department as food.
Haversack- n. A bag on a sling used for carrying food and small personal items.
Mainstreamer- n. A reenactor who is somewhere inbetween being a farb and being a progressive.
Mainstreamers make up most of the reenacting community.
Militia- n. A group of irregular troops mustered up to defend the homefront.
Motel Militia- n. Reenactors who stay at a hotel at night rather than camping outside. See also "Ramada
Ranger".
Period Farb- n. A person in an original photograph, text, or other media who is doing something that
reenactors consider to be farby.
Shell- n. An explosive projectile, often fired at the enemy to "soften up the line".
Shell Jacket- n. The principal garment of the Confederate army.
Sutler- n. A vendor who sells Civil War reproductions and gear for reenactors.
Tompion- n. A barrel plug for a musket or rifle.
Water Buffalo- n. The big water trucks where you fill canteens at events.
Yankee- n. A northerner or Union soldier.
Yahoo- n. A redneck or Confederate fanatic with little regard for the rules at an event.
Zouave- n. A soldier in a Zouave unit. Zouaves are charachteristically dressed in red baggy pants and short vests.
